American football
While the sport is played globally, there is a clue in the name. The main focus as far as American Football is concerned is on the National Football League (NFL) which exclusively showcases teams based in the USA.
The Big League
There is, however, a move to bring the NFL to a wider audience and in recent years, a number of games have been played at London’s Wembley Stadium. In the future, we may see further growth around the world but, wherever the NFL may be played, Unibet will be standing by. We have an active sportsbook throughout the season and the backing of live streamed games to enhance the excitement.
The NFL celebrated its centenary in 2020 and it’s now embarking on another hundred years of high class American football action. The league was established in August 1920 and the first official season began shortly afterwards. Originally known as the American Professional Football Association (APFA), the name was changed to NFL in 1922
The game can trace its roots back a little further. The very first game of organized football took place in New Jersey in 1869 with a game between Princeton and Rutgers. The sport grew from this point until there was a clear need for an organised set up in the first half of the 20th century.
That very first season saw 14 teams involved, all of whom have since faded into history. There are some great names on the list including the Muncie Flyers, the Rock Island Independents, the Dayton Triangles and the Columbus Panhandles. The league had begun but at this stage, we were a long way from the sport that we know today.
The Super Bowl Years
Teams that are currently showcased by Unibet TV started to form later on and, in 1967, sides played for a new trophy. The Super Bowl came along in that year and, in the present day, it’s one of the most valuable prizes in sport.
The Vince Lombardi Trophy is awarded to the winning team and the Super Bowl now attracts around 100 million viewers worldwide.
Current NFL seasons consist of 32 teams who are split equally between two Conferences - the AFC and the NFC. Those Conferences are then divided into four divisions of four sides and, during the regular season, each team will play 16 games. The best performing teams will then progress to the playoffs with the Super Bowl waiting as the ultimate goal.
Right through the campaign, from the start of the regular season to the Super Bowl itself, Unibet is here to provide a comprehensive service to fans and bettors. An extensive NFL sportsbook is backed up by Unibet TV - our live streamed broadcasts which pick up the best of the gridiron action.
The College Game
The NFL has a near monopoly on the American football sportsbooks but there is an alternative for those looking to focus away from the main pro league. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) organises college football in the US and, to an extent, they provide a development league for the NFL. The best players in NCAA football are looking to gain a life changing contract in the NFL draft and that’s enough to ensure thrilling, top class sport.
College football provides entertaining competition in its own right and, at one stage, it was just as popular as the NFL. The two organisations moved in different directions once the Super Bowl was implemented but the college game retains a loyal following.
The current format of the game sees no fewer than 130 teams take part in the NCAA Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision. It’s not the easiest name to remember but all we really need to know is that this is the elite level as far as college football in the United States is concerned.
The biggest games can still attract tens of thousands of spectators and we back up that interest with a host of sporting markets plus coverage of all of the biggest American football games via Unibet TV.
